Today we are in Neko harbor
. I love that they name these areas that are nothing but glaciers and icebergs. Looking to shore you can see the granite mountain and then to the right you can see the glacier running down to the sea
So much is amazing here. One amazing phenomena are the Flat top icebergs look like they have been put into a Lego mold, and then set in the ocean.
. It is very dry in Antarctica. They only get 10 inches of snow per year. Because of this the weather has felt warmer than it is in Ithaca.
Today we had a talk from 2 scientists from Oceanitis. Viking is filled with scientists who get a free ride to Antarctica in exchange for giving us talks along with doing their scientific research. These 2 people are penguin counters. They actually go to the penguin nests and count the nests.
Each nests are counted as two penguins. They stay out 3 to 6 hours per day counting nests. They count each area three times for accuracy. They use drones to find the nests, and if the nests are in a site that the counters can’t get to then they have the drones count the nests, but they find hand counting a lot more accurate.
I think our grandson Jake would be great at this cause he’s always counting when we sit in the car. There is a little problem Jake is three and he sometimes skips 10 numbers. He will go 48,49, 60 61. But he is cute. Today they counted 1000 nests. That number was up 20% from last year so that is encouraging. They use this count for a bell-weather for not only the penguins but the ocean ecology as well.
We also learned that what is happening as far as climate change in Antarctica affects the whole world. David, could you answer this.
Two little bits of nonsense. There’s a poster here that says “If life is a book and you never travel, you are only reading one page “ I love that quote”
Also, whenever they show a video, there’s music for the titles and the music sounds exactly like Downton Abbey.
Sick of the penguins yet? We’re not 😁
