Melanie's Exodus thoughts

Ever since we crossed the border into Egypt I can't - can't get the Indiana Jones theme song out of my head. I'm not sure if its because so many places look like the movie or its because of David's hat.

On the down side climbing through the pyramids was much more difficult than climbing through caves in any Indy movie. The upper part of my body was parallel to the ground. You can imagine what it was like for David.

On the up side there were no snakes.

It isn't possible to describe the pyramids or the Sphinx. Words fail me. Words fail me re: driving in Cairo!, a city of 18 million people, n,o traffic lights or required car insurance. It seem like whoever is bravest plows ahead into the intersection. They seem to be a very brave people and we had more than a few near misses. Gas here is $1 a gallon. Should have brought our car over.

It seems that most people in Cairo live in apartment houses and there is a very interesting system. To rent an apartment you put a down payment of 1/2 of 10 years rent. The landlord takes the large sum for the down payment and builds another floor on top. The system is that the landlord doesn't pay taxes until the building is completed. By building and renting one floor at a time s/he pays less taxes. However the 1/2 finished buildings have a bombed out look to them.

Perfume is a big business in Egypt. We went in a store yesterday and the owner told me that if I bought his perfume I wouldn't have to shower for at least one week. Hmmm...........

Now we are on our way back to

Eilat where we relaxed in our own ways the first day. David went snorkeling and - had a massage. Tomorrow we leave for ;Jerusalem with a stop at the Dead Sea.

Driving down a security guard came with us. His sub machine gun made me a little bit nervous especially since neither he or the driver spoke English.

When we got to Cairo and our tour guide joined us he said it was required of all tours with Americans. Now we are driving back and there is no guard. Explain that logic.
